in collaboration with the Hyde Park Jazz Festival and the Hyde
Park Art Center, blkHaUS
studios co-curated Back Alley Jazz (BAJ) in July 2018 in the South Side
Chicago neighborhood of South Shore. A free, one-day community event, BAJ was also
supported by hosts who generously invited their neighbors and the greater
Chicago community into their backyards to enjoy music, design and art as a
mechanism of community togetherness and celebration. Our event Grand Marshall–musician
and artist Jimmy Ellis, a community elder–inspired the revitalization of this
event, a regular happening he helped to found originally in the 1970's.
